Merck Earns While You Suffer From Fosamax

Jaw death has been linked with the osteoporosis drug Fosamax (Alendronate Sodium). Osteonecrosis of the jaw is a serious condition affecting the parts of the jawbone. If it remains untreated, it can lead to extreme pain which may require removal of the jaw.
Fosamax is a bisphosphonate drug designed to cure bone loss caused by osteoporosis among women during post-menopausal period. About 3,000 cases of ONJ have been reported since 2003 and more than 10 million have used Fosamax after it was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1995.
Several patients taking bisphosphonates have been found positive of symptoms of osteonecrosis as published in a letter by the Journal of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery. Research to support this claim subsequently exposed that dozens of these osteonecrosis cases are associated with Fosamax.
Numerous abnormalities can be experienced by Fosamax users. These are the following:
-Teeth loss
-Exposed jawbone
-Swelling jaw
-Infection of the gums or jaw infection
-Loss of sensation
-Sensational gum loss
-Slow healing gums
Symptoms occur in weeks or months that can sometimes lead a doctor to diagnose it as a rare bone disease. It will result to damaged bone tissues and collapsed joints if osteonecrosis stays undetected.
Osteonecrosis of the jaw can be diagnosed using imaging scans. A bone biopsy can be performed on some occasions. Treatment of osteonecrosis is indefinite. Surgical techniques have been developed through a clinical research to treat bone diseases including osteonecrosis. Options for treatment can be provided to the patient if an early detection of the condition take place.
The risks of taking the drug are not known to many until they developed osteonecrosis. In 2004, Merck, the manufacturer of Fosamax has been required to spread out warnings to health professionals and to include risk information in labels of Fosamax and other bisphosphonate drugs.
A fight against Fosamax lawsuit is being faced by Merck. This osteoporosis drug has been blamed for causing the sufferings of thousands of patients who have taken Fosamax. Being the company’s top earning contributor, this was never pulled out from markets despite the mounting Fosamax lawsuit filed against the company.
